By Patrick DeMoss | 8/4/18 — Ah, yes! MMA fans rejoice as the “Notorious” Conor McGregor is making his long-awaited return to the octagon against the current Lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. The news was broke during the UFC 25 year anniversary, where many other big upcoming fights were previewed, including the return of McGregor’s rival, Nate Diaz, at UFC 230. Diaz will be taking on Dustin Poirier in what is most likely a #1 contenders’ bout to challenge the winner of Conor and Khabib.

McGregor has not competed in combat sports since his boxing fight with Floyd Mayweather, back in November of last year. In terms of MMA competition, the last time we saw Mcgregor fight was at UFC 205 in late 2016, when he dethroned Eddie Alvarez to claim the Lightweight belt, before eventually being stripped.

For Khabib, he has been somewhat active, defeating the likes of Michael Johnson, Edson Barboza, and Al Iaquinta in his undefeated rise to the top. He last defeated Iaquinta at UFC 223.

This is certainly an interesting matchup, and one us fans have been looking forward to coming to fruition for quite some time. Many people love the matchup stylistically, as Khabib is primarily a wrestler, and McGregor is obviously a striker.

However, I see this fight being very competitive. I think in terms of advantages, McGregor will dominate this fight on the feet, and against Eddie Alvarez, he had solid takedown defense. I’m not saying that it will hold well against Khabib, but we shall see.

Also, something to keep in mind is that McGregor has been working a lot of Jiu-Jitsu as well, and already has possibly the best boxing in the UFC, I know, a bold statement. That said, Nurmagomeov has seemed impossible to crack as he is able to smother his opponents in the blink of an eye with his excellent grappling. Also, we have seen improvement in his stand-up as well recently.

Keep a look out for my complete breakdown of this fight as the date gets closer and until then, lets get hype for UFC 229, which takes place Oct. 6th in the T-Mobile Arena is Las Vegas.
