Brooklyn, N.Y. – After his first fight with Sergio Mora on August 1, 2015, where he scored a second round TKO, Jacobs compared fighting Golovkin similar to a character in the video game Mortal Kombat.
“The middleweight division is like Mortal Kombat. With each fight, each opponent, you’re fighting to go to the next level.GGG is like Scorpion, one of the best characters in the game. Eventually you’ll have to face the best character in the game in order to get to the top and that’s what I intend to do.”
The much anticipated mega fight between the WBC, WBA (super), IBF, and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) vs the WBA (regular) middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) has finally been announced and is scheduled to take place on March 18, live at Madison Square Garden, the mecca of sports and entertainment. This fight is a career defining fight. With (35) consecutive knockout wins between the (2) champions there will be NO REMATCH CLAUSE. This is WINNER TAKES ALL. Both men shared their thoughts on their upcoming mega fight.
Daniel Jacobs – WBA (regular) middleweight champion
I’d like to thank everyone for being here today. This is the fight that I’ve always wanted. To consider myself the best I have to fight the best fighter in my division. I have the utmost respect for Gennady and his team. I have to come in and prove to the world; I have to shock the world and let everyone know that I am the best. I feel in my heart, throughout all my trials and tribulations, the creator will not let me get this far to fail. I’m 100% mentally, physically prepared for this fight. There’s going to be a new undisputed middleweight champion of the world.
I want to thank Al Haymon for always being in my corner, giving me the opportunity for me to showcase my skills on a national and international level; Keith Connolly who’s like my brother, he’s been there for me since day one; Andre Rozier, my trainer, the head man in charge; my late, great trainer Victor Roundtree, who will be watching one. My family who I love very dearly; my son Nathaniel Jacobs who is the biggest boxing family you’ll see in the world. I do this for him. I tell him you have to be different, you have to be great. When times get hard you have to take on those challenges. It takes a special person to face the toughest challenges in life and overcome. That’s my mission in this fight. Not only to prove to the world but to prove to my son. When you set your mind to anything that you do, no matter who believes you, no matter what others think, as long as you believe in yourself anything is possible. I’ve proved that time and time again and I believe this is no different.
This is truly one of the biggest fights in the middleweight division. He is one of the best middleweights. The belts show for it. I’m glad it’s finally happening; it’s taking place in my hometown, it’s going to be a sold out crowd, and I can’t wait to see everyone there. Much respect to Team Golovkin but my team and I have amazing plan and I look forward to executing it.
Gennady Golovkin – WBC, WBA (super), IBF, and IBO middleweight champion
I’m very excited. This is a huge fight for me, for us, for everybody. I believe Daniel is ready for this fight because I have all the four belts. This is a dream for every fighter. This is very important for us, to be number one in the middleweight division; for today, at this time; not tomorrow, not for the future but for now.
Please come to Madison Square Garden on the 18. It’s going to be a big show.
Tom Loefflier – K2 promotions
“This is truly a mega-fight. We have two of the hardest punchers in boxing fighting for supremacy of the middleweight division. Together they have (35) consecutive knockout wins. He (Jacobs) has always said that he wanted this fight. He never showed that he didn’t want this fight. He has been patient throughout the negotiations and now the fight has finally been made. There’s no rematch clause in place. It’s all or nothing.”
“Gennady has fought many men growing up in Kazakhstan who are tougher than some guys from Brooklyn. Jacobs has beaten cancer, a tougher opponent in life that he’s ever faced in the ring.”
Andre Rozier – Trainer (Team Jacobs)
“This is my son. He fears no man. He’s been through everything in life. We respect Golovkin and Abel (Abel Sanchez/trainer for Gennady Golovkin). I’ve known Abel for years but on fight night I don’t know him. I don’t Gennady. I know my son and I know what he will do his best and that’s win.”
