Was is exciting? At times. Did it live up to the hype? That’s another discussion for another day. Was the sweet science of boxing displayed? Absolutely.
Anthony Joshua successfully defeated previous heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. with superb footwork and a steady jab to keep his opponent at bay.
There were glimpses in the fight where one would think that Ruiz Jr. would find a way to land a punch that would change the outcome of the fight.
As everyone around the world waited for that punch, it just never came. Ruiz Jr, fighting in Saudi Arabia, was simply stuck in the sand.
Joshua controlled every aspect of this fight. From the first round, after landing a powerful right hand and cutting open the left eye of Ruiz Jr., Joshua continued to peck away at his opponent.
Joshua’s height, reach, and ring intelligence thwarted any offensive strategy that Ruiz Jr, who claimed that “trained himself” could muster up.
“The first time was nice, I had to do it twice. This was about boxing. It was all about preparation. I had to correct myself. I put on a beautiful boxing performance. Stay hungry and stay humble. I want to thank Andy Ruiz and his family. I want to say thank to all of Saudi Arabia. I look forward to a third fight with Ruiz Jr.”

“It was his night (Joshua). I didn’t prepare the right way. I gained too much weight. I want to have a third fight with him. I tried to train myself for this fight. I was chasing him too much. I couldn’t throw my combinations. No excuses, but I want another fight.”
