“If I can make it here I can make it anywhere. NEW YORK NEW YORK NEW YORK!!!” The famous lyrics sung by the late great Frank Sinatra is synonymous with people coming to the city, looking to accomplish their big dreams and life aspirations. For Canelo Alvarez, the red carpet has been drawn out, courtesy of Golden Boy Promotions, Matchroom Boxing, and DAZN.
Alvarez, the pay-per view star, will look to cash in early on his 11-fight deal with global sports streaming leader DAZN as he challenges Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) for his WBA Super Middleweight World Title. This groundbreaking deal is the richest athlete contract in sports history.
The bout is scheduled to take place on December 15, live at Madison Square Garden. With the partnership of Golden Boy Promotions to put on 10 high-caliber fight nights per year that will stream live on DAZN beginning in early 2019, this is the first step to global domination for both Alvarez and DAZN in the sport of boxing.
Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs), the former Super Welterweight and current Middleweight World Champion will challenge Fielding in hopes of becoming a three division world champion. With that being said, the questions begs: if successful, will he remain at 16blb or return back to 160lb? The Mexican superstar will look to put on a performance like never before.
For Fielding, this fight gives him an opportunity to show the fans in the United States exactly what type of fighter he is. The WBA (Regular) Super Middleweight Champion looks to have an impressive fight on fight night as he goes against arguably the best boxer in the sport.
Alvarez’s list of opponents is a “who’s who” in boxing. He’s faced and defeated the most feared puncher in boxing Gennady Golovkin; he’s defeated the defensive and slick southpaw Erislandy Lara; and he’s defeated future International Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee and three-division world champion Miguel Cotto.
Alvarez’s list of accomplishments include:
- WBA (Super) Middleweight Champion
- WBC Middleweight Champion
- Ring and Lineal Middleweight titles
- WBO Light Middleweight (Super Welterweight) title
- WBA (Unified) Light Middleweight (Super Welterweight) title
- WBC Light Middleweight (Super Welterweight) title
- Ring Light Middleweight (Super Welterweight) titles
He’s a modern-day icon in the sport that has an entire country of fans ready to chant his name at any given time. One word (Canelo) is all that it takes to get a crowd going.
In speaking with Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, he understands and recognizes Canelo’s appeal to the world. However, in promoting Fields, he believes his fighter has a good shot at defeating the one of the most famous boxers on the planet.
The globalization of boxing as a main stream sport is beginning to grow expeditiously, with credit to DAZN’s belief and focus to deliver fights that fans desperately want to see. DAZN, along with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, have quickly gained traction in the states. The DAZN app is feasible and most importantly inexpensive. It provides fight fans more opportunity to follow and support the sport they love, along with other sports and athletes throughout the world.
On December 15, will Canelo be able to get past the first of many fights/opponents since the signing of his mega contract? Can Rocky Fielding spoil Canelo’s New York Showcase as they both fight for the first time at the Mecca of Sports and Entrainment? This, we shall see.
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing Managing Director
“We joined up with DAZN, our biggest global boxing partners a few months ago, and when we give you our commitment, we give you our heart, we give you our blood, and we had a mission to make sure the DAZN platform would work and be a success. We launched the platform with Anthony Joshua, the first show being live on DAZN, and now through Golden Boy and DAZN, they bring Canelo Saul Alvarez. This is a game changer for the world of boxing and the way boxing fans digest content.”
“This fight is a wonderful opportunity for Rocky Fielding. He always kept patient. He traveled to Germany to win the world title. He’s always boxed everyone we’ve offered him. This is a golden opportunity for him. He comes in as the defending champion, but he’s also blessed to fight at one of the best arenas in sports history.”
“Things are about to change. The whole game is about to change.”
“I’ve always said, when one door closes, another door opens. And we’re very happy with this new alliance that we’ve made with DAZN. Forget about the prices, the amount of money we’re making. The most important thing is that fans can enjoy this fight at a very low price. Thank you very much DAZN and Golden Boy, I’m very happy.”
On the fight: “For me it’s a challenge. It’s a new challenge to move up a division. We know the challenge we have in front of us and we’re going to train real hard to enter the history of Mexican boxing.”
“Everyone wrote me off, no one gave me a chance, and I went there, believing I could do it, and I got the win. I’ve worked so hard all my life to get to the world stage. And now I’m fighting the biggest name, the biggest star in boxing. It’s every fighter’s dream to fight at MSG. I’ve worked so hard all my life for it.”
“It’s the Mecca of boxing. I was there three years ago with my girlfriend, did a tour around Madison Square Garden and got ourselves tickets to the New York Knicks games, $30 dollar tickets right in the top tier. I was going to my girlfriend, imagine fighting here one day. Three years later I get a call and I’m topping the bill, do you know what I mean, it’s unbelievable!”
“It’s what we dream of, it’s what we’re in the game for, big fights, big nights, big names and I don’t shy away from anyone. This fight made sense in every department.”
“I respect Canelo, I’ve watched him over the years. I’m going in there to win. I’m coming in as a world champion. I want to give everything. Expect a good fight and I’m coming to win. “When we had the face off, the first thing I saw were cuts from the ‘GGG’ fight which were still fresh.”
“There’s no way he’s going to be able to put eight pounds of muscle on since his last fight, but he’s elite and I know that it’s my biggest test. I’m confident, though. I wouldn’t have taken it otherwise. It’s at my weight, and I am big for the weight. I can punch, I’m heavy-handed and I can box.”
MIDDLEWEIGHT knockout sensation David Lemieux (40-4, 34 KOs) will look to make a second potential Knockout of the Year performance before 2018 ends as he takes on Tureano Johnson (20-2, 14 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round bout of Canelo Alvarez vs Rocky Fielding undercard. The bill will also feature the return of Sadam “World Kid” Ali and will showcase some of Golden Boy Promotions’ best rising stars.
Oscar De La Hoya, CEO and Chairman of Golden Boy Promotions
“Golden Boy Promotions will give fans early Christmas gifts this year as we offer yet another great card to close 2018 on a very high note. David Lemieux still has his eyes set on Canelo, and that night they will be in the same arena. Lemieux knows that if he loses against Tureano Johnson, he can forget about any shot with Canelo.”
“Also, each of these undercard fights, even the ones featuring Sadam Ali, Ryan Garcia, Vergil Ortiz and Lamont Roach, Jr., could easily be the main attraction of any other event, so fans should not miss out on this great night of action – especially when it’s free for new DAZN subscribers.”
